Une nuit, un petit garçon David McLean est réveillé par une soucoupe volante qui atterrit derrière sa maison et se dissimule dans une dune. Son père, savant réputé, s'approche et est happé à l'intérieur de l'engin. Il en ressort, transformé en une sorte d'automate docile par un relais implanté dans son cerveau. Sa mère ne tarde pas à suivre le même chemin, puis son amie la petite Nancy, de même que le chef de la police. Personne ne croit l'enfant lorsqu'il raconte ce qui s'est passé...
