Rostropovich - devenu dès les années cinquante l'une des célébrités de la scène musicale mondiale - dût quitter son pays en 1972. Défenseur de Soljenitsyne avant que ce dernier ne fut expulsé d'URSS pour avoir publié L'Archipel du Goulag, il s'installa à Paris et Washington après avoir été privé de sa citoyenneté par les autorités soviétiques. C’est ainsi que naquit sa légende. Pour évoquer cette histoire hors du commun, nous convoquerons archives rares et témoignages de sa famille, Olga et Elena Rostropovich, et de ses amis Natalia et Ignat Soljenitsyne, Marta Casals-Istomin et Guennadi Rojdestvensky.
