Au cours d'une expédition à laquelle il participait, le père du jeune Toomaï est tué par un tigre. Le chef de l’expédition renvoie le garçon chez lui malgré ses supplications pour rester avec l’expédition. Toomaï n'est pas très loin quand il entend les barrissements furieux de son éléphant Kala Nag. Fou de colère, l'animal a jeté à terre son nouveau cornac, qui exige qu'il soit tué. Toomaï veut à tout prix sauver Kala Nag et l’emmène très loin dans la jungle.
