David Palmer, un jeune chimiste, retourne à la ferme de son père dans l'Indiana, pour épouser une institutrice locale, Ruth Treadwell. David rencontre à nouveau l'entraîneur de chevaux de son père, Ben Lathrop, dont la fille, Cissy, a quitté le lycée pour aider son père. Palmer se marie et devient riche grâce à une invention, et est capable de satisfaire sa femme socialement ambitieuse. Son père meurt et Palmer retourne en Indiana, où son intérêt pour les courses attelées est ravivé, tout comme son intérêt pour Cissy Lathrop.
