Jody est un chômeur noir d'une vingtaine d'années qui vit encore chez sa mère Juanita. Il a deux petits garçons de deux femmes différentes, Yvette et Peanut. Sweetpea, son meilleur ami, accumule les embrouilles et passe la moitié de sa vie en prison.Juanita a décidé de refaire sa vie à 36 ans avec Melvin, un ancien gangster.
