Il était une fois, le prince Laird, un homme méchant et méprisant. N'ayant pas hérité de la couronne, il cherche à se venger en échangeant sa fille nouveau-née avec celle de son frère, le roi Keath. La vraie princesse est élevée en tant que paysanne, ignorant sa lignée royale. Quelques années plus tard, le prince Rollo vient au royaume à la recherche d'une épouse. Il tombe amoureux de la paysanne, sans se douter de sa véritable identité.
